Experience

I am in the process of completing my certification in Orton-Gillingham of MN. Orton-Gillingham is the preferred method to help with dyslexia. It is a multisensory sequential method of learning with a healthy dose of phonemic awareness. I am an Orton Gillingham Certified tutor. I take all ages from kindergarten through high school. I have four children, one with learning disabilities including dyslexia and dysgraphia, and one with mild cognitive disabilities and cerebral palsy. I ended up taking my son out of public school and homeschooling for a year because he just was not making progress in school. I knew I didn't want to homeschool forever and so our journey began to get him caught up. I discovered OG and how I could help him. It was amazing to watch him begin to get it. He went back to school after being out for just over one year (second semester of fourth grade through first semester of fifth grade). In state testing, he went from not meeting standard to just a few points below exceeding. This was with full accommodations in place. I decided that I wanted more formal training in OG so that I could help other kids like my son. It is very painful to watch your child struggle and sometimes just give up. It is not an easy journey with my son and we are constantly battling his tendency to give up before trying. I so wish I had known to start earlier. Update on my son: I have again pulled him out of school to homeschool this year. He is in 9th grade and it is a whole new ballgame. He is struggling to pull everything together and not just give up. This became his go to while at school. I am very hopeful that we will make some great progress, but it going to be a long road. It is a slower process with my daughter with cognitive disabilities, but she expresses such joy each time she learns something new. I highly recommend this for anyone who has a child struggling with reading. Even if it is not with me, it is definitely the way to go for a child with dyslexia.
